This is an account book of a freight transfer and storage firm in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.  Lewis Ziegler was probably the proprietor.  The account book includes two separate records: “Lead Book for the use of Ziegler & Co.,” 1843-1849; and “Iron Received from Iron Mountain,” 1850-1853.

Lewis Ziegler was born in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri, in 1818.  Although biographical details are sparse, his family is thought to have come from Alsace-Lorraine.  Goodspeed’s History of Southeast Missouri notes that he “made his start in life by hauling ore from Iron Mountain to Ste. Genevieve,” before purchasing a large farm and pursuing agriculture for the remainder of his life.

The two-part account book is a record of freight business at Ste. Genevieve, 1843-1853.  Ziegler and Company acted as storage and transfer agents, handling freight shipments through its landing on the Mississippi River.  The entries in each part of the volume are similar, and include the date of each receipt and the person or firm to whom it was credited.  Shipments made from Ste. Genevieve via steamboat and barge are noted, with the name of the vessel.  Part 1, although captioned “Lead Book,” contains an almost equal number of transactions involving lumber, wheat or flour, and gunpowder.  Some of the accounts are noted, “On Storage.”  Part 2 contains only accounts of ore delivered from Iron Mountain, 1850-1853.  The names of the haulers and the payments made to them are included.

Part 1 has been indexed to page 25.  Part 2 has not been indexed.
