This is an account ledger of a mercantile
operation at Ste. Genevieve,
Bennett Spalding handled a large variety
of clothing, fabrics, housewares, and groceries. The dates of his operations are unknown, but
Spalding is mentioned in various court dockets in the Ste. Genevieve Archives
in the 1840s and 1850s. He made several
large purchases of goods in 1850-1851 from M. E. Powers at
A surname index to the account ledger has
been prepared. The volume is numbered by
account rather than by page. Several
unnumbered accounts, including those with M. E. Powers and Michael Spalding,
are entered at the rear of the volume. A
fragmentary, undated listing of goods purchased by various individuals was
enclosed inside the volume and has been filmed following it. The document appears to be the sales record
for an auction.
