Programming on NT workstations

Creating an Email account

In order to use the NT workstations, you must have an email (UNIX) account. To set up your email account, go to this web page: http://www.umr.edu/~helpdesk. From there, choose "create an email account" and read the pages. You will then have to accept the typical copyright law notifications (there are 4 buttons to push here) and click on continue. Then fill out the form that appears and click on continue. After that, follow the instructions on the screen.

The instructions for creating your email account are available in more detail at the helpdesk which is in the basement of the Computer Science building.

Starting and Using Windows NT

OK, now that you have an account, you need to log onto the machines. If the desktop is open (if there are icons on the screen), select start -> shutdown -> close all programs and log on as a different user.

Once you see the screen that tells you to press ctrl-alt-delete to log on, do that. You will get a screen asking you to enter your user id, and password. These are the same as for your email account.

You may get a screen asking for your novell account information. If so, use your email account id, and the YYMMDD of your birthday on this screen. To change this, ask me and I'll tell you how to set it up so this doesn't show up all the time.

Those of you using the intro machines (Fortran, CS-53 and CS-74/78) will then choose Krb5 telnet from the desktop and fill out the page that appears as follows:

to Host: intro.cs.umr.edu

leave the 3 boxes checked

leave the userid box empty

click ok

the system should log you in automatically, and show: term = (vt100)

press <enter> and you should see a prompt such as: intro3 (1)>

You can open up multiple telnet sessions from NT by running Krb5 telnet multiple times. This allows you to leave your editor open in one window, and in another window, you can compile and run the program to see if it works or not.

WHEN YOU ARE DONE, BE SURE TO SELECT: start -> shutdown -> close all programs and log on as a different user so that another user won't have access to your account!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
