The

Research Seminar in Analysis

in conjunction with the Colloquium at UMR

meets again in G5 (Rolla Building)

on Monday, Dec 4, 2000, 3:30 pm.

All interested faculty and students are invited to attend.

Ravi Agarwal (National University of Singapore) is lecturing on
Singular and Nonsingular Boundary Value Problems on Infinite Intervals.

We shall begin with several examples of second order boundary value problems on infinite intervals occuring in the fields of fluid dynamics, solid-propellant rockets, mass transfer, heat transfer, plasma physics, elasticity, electrical potential theory, and the theory of colloids. From a mathematical point of view for such problems up to the late 1960's very little was known; in fact most of the known results required rather technical hypotheses and only applied to narrowly defined classes of problems. In recent years a mixture of classical analysis and modern fixed point theory has been employed to study these problems. This has resulted in some widely applicable results which we shall discuss. (NO PROOFS WILL BE GIVEN.)
