Chapter 14 - Thin-Walled Pressure Vessels

Objectives

Course objective:  To learn to calculate the stresses, strains and displacements for pressure vessels.

Learning objectives:

  • Calculate stresses and strains on the inner and outer surfaces of spherical (0.98) and cylindrical (0.80) pressure vessels.

  • Apply concept of factor-of-safety from chapter 4 to pressure vessels.
  • Apply concepts of principals, maximum shear, absolute maximum shear, and strain gages from chapters 12 and 13 to pressure vessels.
  • Calculate changes in vessel dimensions (0.76).
  • Recognize difference between open and closed pressure vessels.
  • Apply concept of rotated elements from chapters 12 and 13 to welded pressure vessels (0.68).
