Calculating Your Class Grade

If each quiz is worth 11% and the final exam is worth 23%, then one could use the following formula to estimate his/her class grade. Q1 = score on quiz 1, etc. The final exam score will replace the lowest quiz score, assuming it is higher than the lowest quiz score.

Semester Grade = 0.11 Q1 + 0.11 Q2 + 0.11 Q3 + 0.11 Q4+ 0.11 Q5 + 0.11 Q6 + 0.11 Q7 + 0.23 Final

If you need a C in the class, then the formula can be modified to look like this.

69.5 = 0.11 Q1 + 0.11 Q2 + 0.11 Q3 + 0.11 Q4 + 0.11 Q5 + 0.11 Q6 + 0.11 Q7 + 0.23 Final

And it can be rearranged to solve for the average you will need on the remaining quizzes and final exam.  You can fill in your particular values for Q1, Q2, Q3 ....

Average of remaining scores needed to get a C = ( 69.5 - 0.11 Q1 - 0.11 Q2 - 0.11 Q3 - 0.11 Q4  - 0.11 Q5 - 0.11 Q6) / 0.34

If you need a D in the class, then you can modify it to look like this.

Average of remaining scores needed to get a D = ( 59.5 - 0.11 Q1 - 0.11 Q2 - 0.11 Q3  - 0.11 Q4  - 0.11 Q5 - 0.11 Q6) / 0.34

To account for the final replacing your lowest quiz, then delete that quiz from the above formulas and divide by 0.34.  The equations would look like the following for someone with their lowest score being quiz 3.

Final exam score to get a C = ( 69.5 - 0.11 Q1 - 0.11 Q2 - 0.11 Q4  - 0.11 Q5 - 0.11 Q6 - 0.11 Q7 ) / 0.34
Final exam score to get a D = ( 59.5 - 0.11 Q1 - 0.11 Q2 - 0.11 Q4  - 0.11 Q5 - 0.11 Q6 - 0.11 Q7 ) / 0.34
