Problem Format
The following format should be followed in working homework problems, quizzes, board work and exams.
- Statics
- Sketch the necessary free body diagrams showing dimensions, forces, etc.
- Sum forces and moments.
- MoM
- Write out the starting equation(s) in general form first, then substitute numerical values for the particular problem.
- For clarity, you may omit units on intermediate steps. Check consistency and show correct units at the end of the problem.
- Box the answer. Check to make sure answers are reasonable using common sense and technical judgment.
Homework Suggestions
Refer to someone else's solution ONLY after you have gotten stuck, and use it only to get unstuck.
- Getting stuck (finding out what you don’t know) is an important step in the learning process!
- Do NOT read solutions and expect to do well on tests. Questions vary too much to memorize.
- The only way to pass this class is to efficiently work problems.
