Objectives

The objectives for this week's experiment are:

1. To show how the combined effects of axial loading and bending affect the stress state across the beam.
2. To compare experimental data to theoretical predictions for the stress state.
3. To gain further experience with strain gages and strain indicators.

 

 

A short post with five strain gages will be loaded in compression.

 

The strain will be measured in each of the five strain gages giving the strain gradient across the section.

 

The post will be loaded through ball bearings on the top and bottom in order to approximate a point load.
