Assignment
Students should come to lab having already read the sections of ASTM F606 listed below. Each group must decide beforehand what data to record in order to complete the following assignment and the appropriate test procedures to obtain that data. Lab staff will assist with equipment operation only.
Available Fasteners (partial list)Each student will select one of the available fasteners to test for hardness.
- record fastener dimensions and distinguishing characteristics
- determine the hardness according to ASTM F606 section 3.1 (bolts), section 4.1 (nuts), or section 5 (washers)
- data sheet
Each group will also select and test a small bolt for hardness and maximum tensile strength.
- record bolt dimensions and distinguishing characteristics
- estimate the strength grade based on head markings, or the lack thereof, and/or other distinguishing characteristics
- determine the hardness as per ASTM F606 section 3.1
- estimate tensile strength based on the hardness, just as you did in the Hardness Testing lesson
- determine the tensile strength as per ASTM F606 section 3.4
Summarize your results, as per your teachers' instructions, and submit at the start of the next lab class. Be sure to include exactly which procedures you followed in obtaining the data, whether these procedures were appropriate after further consideration, and what procedures you would add or omit if you were to run the tests again.
