Thick-wall Aluminum Pressure Vessel
E = 10 x 106 psi v = 0.33 inside diameter = 1.457 inches outside diameter = 5.906 inches r (gage radius)* = 1.102 inches * for gages 1 and 2
With this apparatus the student is able to verify the various analytical formulae with actual measured results. Strain gages, mounted in various positions and on various radii throughout the cylinder wall, provide an opportunity for students to interpret the measured strains as stresses, throughout the wall, when subjected to an internal cylinder pressure.
The two halves of the cylinder are firmly cemented together. One face of the joint has a shallow groove turned eccentrically to the bore. This groove contains ten active strain gages fixed in the positions shown on the clear perspex cover of the apparatus and depicted below. The groove is completely filled with the jointing cement. Additional active gages in the hoop and longitudinal directions, on both the bore and outside diameter of the cylinder, allow measurement of principal strains on these surfaces.
