Adjustment Factors for Laterally Loaded Nails

Adjusted Design Values

NDS table 10.3.1

conditions

  1. 10-year duration
  2. initially dry and remains dry
  3. normal temperature
  4. at least 6D penetration
  5. nail is driven into side grain of main (holding) member
  6. nail is not part of diaphragm or shearwall nailing
  7. nail is not drive as a toenail

Impact Loading

2.0 seconds or less  ≈  a crane lifting or lowering a load

CD = 2.0 ???

source

lab experiments  ≈  5-10 minutes

so NDS limits CD to 1.6 for nails

Diaphragms

Cdi only applies to sheathing nails

Cdi does not apply to chord or strut splices
