Classes I Teach
SP&M 85, Principles of Speech.
I usually teach this course each semester.
For information about the curriculum, you might want to read my article
"Public Speaking Pedagogy in the Media Age," published in the journal
Communication Education, 39:2 (April, 1990). Four
speeches or presentation are required of each student.
SP&M 150, Interpersonal Communication.
I usually teach this course each Fall Semester. It usually meets
Tuesday and Thursday from 11:05 to 12:20. This course follows the
Tavistock Institute model I first encountered at the University of
Minnesota back in the 1970s which convinced me that we have to know what's
going on inside us before we can expect to build meaningful relationships
with others. The class motto is "When you're up to your fannie in
alligators, it's hard to remember you set out to drain the swamp." Not
very original, but you get the idea. The text is Stewart's Bridges,
not Walls.
SP&M 255, Modern Conference Methods.
This course is usually taught Winter Semester from 11:05 - 12:20
on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It combines theory and experience in small
group communication. Students form public interest groups that identify
and tackle real campus and community problems while learning and
practicing the skills of effective group work. The text is Bormann and
Bormann's Effective Small Group Communication.
SP&M 265 and 270, Leadership Communication and
Leadership Practicum.
I teach these courses alternately with Professor Daniel. They
are part of the Excel Leadership Academy Curriculum and are required of
all Leadership Communication Minors. Texts and readings vary. Students
in these courses form an important component of the Excel Program doing
research int he Leadership/Small Group Laboratory and/or serving as
leadership interns in the Excel Workshop organization.
SP&M 100, 200, & 300.
These are special problems courses you can only enroll in by
special arrangement with me.
