__ W. H. Echols, Professor of applied mathematics at MSM, 1887, Director of MSM 1888-91. From his response to a national survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Education in the late 1880s. The specific question which elicited the above response was "Do you favor memorizing rules in algebra?".
