- DISPLACEMENT BASED ASEISMIC DESIGN CHARTS
FOR RIGID WALLS
- June, 1995
- by
- Shamsher Prakash, Y. Wu,
- and E. Arni Rafnsson
- ISBN 09641737-2-7
- Rigid walls experience both sliding and rocking displacements during
earthquakes. In this book, charts have been prepared to compute those displacements
for walls, 4m - 10m high, subjected to ground motion of 0.1g - 0.5g, earthquake
magnitude of M5.25 - M8.5 and for seven different types of base soils and
three backfills from 3675 possible combinations. The wall sections have
been designed for static factors of safety against sliding, rotation and
bearing capacity first. Then their displacements were computed with non-linear
base soil as well as non-linear backfill.
- Design charts have been prepared for displacements of 1% to 10% of
the height of the wall. This is the first "displacement based design
manual" developed for use by the practicing engineers.

- FUNDAMENTALS OF SOIL MECHANICS
- January 1995
- by
- Shamsher Prakash
- ISBN 0-9641737-1-9
- This text is intended for the first course in Soil Mechanics for civil,
geotechnical, architectural and geological engineering students, who describe
soil as dirt when they come to the class on the first day. They have no
idea that there are a very large number of soil types and soil has a large
number of properties. Therefore, in the first course, the students must
be given a clear idea on the behavior of soils in simple and clear terms.
- This text has been especially prepared to introduce the fundamentals
in clear and concise manner. Examples with answers have been added at the
end of each chapter.
- Tables of data for use by the practicing engineer also are included.
- Contents
- 1- Introduction
- 2- Weight Volume Relationships
- 3- Permeability of Soil
- 4- Effective and Neutral Stresses
- 5- Seepage Through Soil
- 6- Consolidation
- 7- Stress Distribution
- 8- Shear Strength of Soils
- 9- Soil Compaction and Improvement
- (Price : $ 60.00 + $ 10 S&H)
- SOIL DYNAMICS
- Reprinted 1991
- by
- Shamsher Prakash
- ISBN 0-9641737-3-5
- This is the first text on the subject and gives complete introduction
of the subject to the first reader of soil dynamics. Basic concepts are
explained in clear and concise language.
- Several solved problems have been included in each chapter. Also Example
problems have been added at the end each chapter.
- Contents
- 1- Introduction
- 2- Theory of Vibrations
- 3- Wave Propagation in an Elastic Medium

- DISPLACEMENT COMPUTATIONS
- OF RIGID RETAINING WALLS
- FOR SEISMIC LOADS
- August, 1996
- by
- Shamsher Prakash, Y. Wu and E.A. Rafnsson
- The conventional design of rigid retaining walls requires estimating
the earth pressure behind a wall and choosing the wall geometry to satisfy
specified factors of safety under static conditions. However, rigid walls
experienced both sliding and rotational displacements during earthquakes.
Performance and serviceability of rigid walls during or after earthquakes
is still an unsolved problem for the designer. Therefore, displacement
based design need be used.
- A solution technique has been developed to simulate the displacement
of rigid walls during earthquakes. A software to design the rigid walls
based on this solution has been developed. This analytical method includes
the following features:
- 1. Nonlinear soil properties of base soil and backfill,
- 2. Frequency dependent stiffness and radiation damping,
- 3. Geometrical and material damping in base soil and backfill,
- 4. Sinusoidal motion as input ground motion,
- 5. Permissible displacement.
- Also, this software is capable to,
- 1. Compute wall dimensions based on static factors of safety,
- 2. Compute rocking, sliding and total displacement at the top of the
wall for given earthquake acceleration and number of loading cycles. The
following figure shows the capability of this software from the output
data,
- 3. Revise the wall dimensions and recompute the displacement of the
wall if it exceeds permissible displacement,
- 4. Check the static factors of safety of the new wall section.
- Therefore, this software will assist an engineer to design rigid walls
during earthquakes for permissible displacements.
- A user's manual lists input-output instructions and typical examples.
The input data will be easily generated by following the instructions.
Also, a brief description of theory, parameters and assumptions are included
in the user's manual.

in Punjab. He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Roorkee University
as well as an M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering from University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign (USA).
- Dr. Prakash is an international expert on soil dynamics and earthquake
engineering. He has published three books in India and five books in the
USA as well as over 200 technical papers. After retirement as a professor
of civil engineering in India, Dr. Prakash joined the University of Missouri-Rolla
faculty.
- Dr. Prakash is fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Institution
of Civil Engineers (London) and Institution of Engineers (India).
- Dr. Prakash took his early training in Yoga at home and at the church
he attended in India. A serious interest in Yoga developed after his return
to India upon completion of graduate studies in the US in 1962. He devoted
his efforts to learning everything possible about Yoga practices and philosophy
from every teacher he could find during years 1962 through 1978.
- He has lectured extensively on geotechnical earthquake engineering
and Yoga in Australia, Canada, England, France, Hong Kong, Iceland, India,
Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan and USA and
many others. He conducts classes on Yoga world wide.
