GEOFIT -- What is it?
  • a hands-on geology and geophysics field camp for middle- and high-school science teachers
  • a collaborative experience where teachers and scientists work together to study the geology and geophysics of the Flint Hills

    Why?
Science and scientific knowledge are changing and expanding rapidly. Middle- and high-school science teachers need real-world experiences to stay abreast of these changes to keep their classrooms GEOFIT.

    GEOFIT will guide you to:

  • Pursue authentic scientific research
  • Identify a geologic problem and formulate hypotheses
  • Select the proper tools/instruments to answer questions, and acquire geological and geophysical data
  • Learn methods of data compilation and analysis
  • Interpret data and generate new scientific questions

    What to expect:
The field camp will be organized around a daily schedule of field work in the Manhattan area to collect data, and lab work with maps, aerial photographs, published materials, and samples collected in the field.
We will emphasize team work and the practice of science by testing ideas and hypotheses. GEOFIT is intended to help stimulate ideas about curriculum development for middle-and high-school classes.
