Doctoral candidates have at least two opportunities for major oral
communication skills enhancement: 1) The candidate makes a
presentation to the department ranging from 40 to 50 minutes, using
slides, transparencies, or a computer driven slide presentation (using
.gif, .rgb, or .tiff files.) 2) The department allocates funds to
help defray the cost of travel to a convention where the student
makes her/his first presents of a paper or a poster session.
This financial assistance makes it possible for every student to enjoy
this important "real world" experience, including students who have an
advisor who may be between grants at the time of their presentation.
