Both Masters and Doctoral Candidates are expected to take at least
24 hours of graduate level courses; on the UMR scale, 300+ is considered
graduate level. At least 6 of the 24 hours should be 400+ level courses.

Each student takes a series of four placement exams at the start of
their first graduate semester at UMR (Analytical, Inorganic, Organic,
and Physical Chemistry.) Less than satisfactory performance in a
requires that the student and the student's advisor devise a plan to
remediate the deficient. This can include taking a lower level
course, or sitting in on a lower level course. Sometimes the
student may take a 300 level course which will both serve the
remedial purpose AND count toward the coursework of the student.
It is highly recommended that the student spend several hours over
the summer to review the four areas of chemistry mentioned above to
refresh their memories; it is noteworthy that these "second sweeps" of
previously learned material are especially beneficial because the
student has developed a background against which to put each idea into
