Chem 2/5 Labs

Density & Statistics

Objective of this experiment:

To use statistical techniques to extract the maximum amount of information
out of a limited data set and calculate the inherent uncertainty
in the measurements.

For another presentation of statistics,
see appendix A on pgs. A1-A8
at the back of your Chem1 text-
"Chemistry-Science of Change, 3rd. ed." by Oxtoby, Freeman & Block

Terms to know for the mid exam:

Random error
Systematic error
Accuracy
Precision
Relative error
Absolute error

Know:

Calculation of standard deviation, mean and confidence interval
Use of t-tables

The confidence interval for an experiment may be improved (narrowed) by

1. collecting more data-not very practical after 5-6 points
2. reducting the standard deviation-using better technique or equipment-
this is the most efficient way
