In chromatographic systems, the efficiency of the exchanges
or equilibrations between mobile and stationary phase that
have occurred as a component, A passes through a column
is determined by measuring how wide the peak is relative to
the amount of time it takes to pass through the column.
This parameter, called theoretical plates, is a measure of how
efficiently the column can separate mixtures.
