Radiochemistry Lab -Nuclear Decay
updated 9/25/04 TB

Objective: To demonstrate the experimental determination of the half life
of Aluminum-28, by neutron activation in the UMR reactor.

Know

1. Nuclear notation format for isotopes and most common particles:
alpha, beta, gamma, neutron

2. Balancing of most common nuclear decay reactions
alpha, beta, gamma decay, fission, fusion

3. Calculation of k, half-life and initial activity from decay data

Nuclear Chemistry is discussed in the chem 1 freshman text, "Chemical Principles"
by Atkins & Jones, 3rd. ed., in Chapt. 17, pgs. 649-673
Sections 17.1-17.2, pgs 494-498 and sect. 17.7 on pgs 660-664 are the most relevant

Also see section 13.4-13.5 on pg 494-498, explaining 1st order kinetic equations
