Syllabus Mathematics 203, Fall Semester 1998

Lecture: Monday, Wednesday, Friday (excluding Sep 7, Oct 9, Nov 25, 27) in CSF-G5E from 1:30 to 2:20. Also, see the Calendar for a complete list of the happenings in this class.
Office Hours: Before each lecture in ROLLA-313 from 12:25 to 1:25. Also by appointment. Appointments may be scheduled in person or via e-mail (bohner@umr.edu), phone (341-6208), or fax (341-4741).
Text: "Linear Algebra and its Applications" by Gilbert Strang, Third Edition.
Contents: The first 6 chapters and some of the topics of Chapters 7 and 8 of the textbook, i.e., Gaussian elimination, vector spaces, linear equations, orthogonality, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and positive definite matrices.
Homework Assignments: There will be 12 weekly homework assignments. They are available in class on the following Wednesdays: Aug 26, Sep 2, 16, 23, 30, Oct 7, 21, 28, Nov 4, 11, 18, Dec 2. Usually, PDF Files of the assignments may be downloaded from my web page already on Tuesday. Homeworks will not be collected, but each Homework Session (i.e., each of Sep 2, 16, 23, 30, Oct 7, 21, 28, Nov 4, 11, 18, Dec 2, 9) will start with a short quiz (about 15 minutes) on one particular problem of the homework assignment (all of the problems on the homework assignment will be covered, i.e., different students may get different quizzes, randomly distributed, with different problems, but all of them part of the previous homework assignment). The quizzes are closed book. The remainder of the Homework Sessions will be devoted to the discussion of the previous homework assignment.
Midterms: There will be 2 midterms on Oct 12 and Nov 23. The midterms are open book.
Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and will be on Tuesday, Dec 15, in CSF-G5E from 10:30 to 12:30 in the morning. The final exam is open book.
Grading Policy: Each of the twelve homework assignments is worth 5 points, each of the two midterms 10 points, and the final exam 20 points. Hence the emphasis on the final amount of points is weighted as follows:
