Syllabus Mathematics 2051, Fall Semester 2001

Lecture: Tuesday and Thursday (excluding Nov 22) in S220 from 3:30 to 4:45 in the afternoon. Also, see the calendar for a complete list of the happenings in this class.
Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday in S311 from 1 to 2 in the afternoon. Also by appointment. Appointments may be scheduled in person, by phone (674-7485), or via e-mail.
Text: Discrete Mathematics by Richard Johnsonbaugh (5th edition), Chapters 1-8.
Description: Formulation of precise definitions and their negations using propositional and predicate logic; argument analysis and proof techniques including induction; number theory; and sets, relations, functions, directed graphs and elementary counting arguments. (Prerequisite: MTH 1000 or MTH 1001.)
Homework Assignments: There will be 11 weekly homework assignments. They are available in class (and as PDF Files on the lecture's web page). Homeworks will be collected and selected problems will be graded. Instead of collection of homeworks, there may be a quiz during class on the homework material.
Midterm Exams: There will be 3 midterm exams during class. These exams will be announced and announcements will be posted on the calendar at least one week in advance.
Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and will be on Friday, Dec 14 from 3:30 to 5:30 in the afternoon.
Grading Policy: Each of the eleven homework assignments is worth 30 points, each of the three hour exams 150 points, and the final exam 220 points. Hence the emphasis on the final amount of points is weighted as follows:

Altogether 1000 points are available. A personal password may be used to obtain the personal scores from the web page. Note that these scores as well as the estimated final grades are updated weekly. The final grade will be determined according to the following table:
