Syllabus Mathematics 417, Fall Semester 1999

Lecture: Tuesday and Thursday (excluding Nov 25) in ROLLA-G4 from 2:05 to 3:20 in the afternoon. Also, see the calendar for a complete list of the happenings in this class.
Office Hours: Before each lecture in ROLLA-115 from 11 to 12. Also on Wednesdays most of the day. And, by appointment. Appointments may be scheduled in person, by phone (341-6208), or via e-mail.
Text: "A Course in Functional Analysis" by John B. Conway (2nd edition). For an errata list on the author's web page click here. The lecture will not follow the textbook in detail but will be based on lecture notes. These lecture notes will be constantly updated and can be downloaded here.
Contents: Chapters 1, 2, and 3, and some of the topics of Chapters 4, 5, and 6 of the textbook, i.e., Hilbert Spaces, Banach Spaces, Hahn-Banach Theorem, Open Mapping Theorem, Closed Graph Theorem, Uniform Boundedness Principle, self-adjoint and normal operators, and principles of optimization by vector space methods. Homework Assignments: There will be 7 homework assignments. They are available in class (and as PDF Files on the lecture's web page) and will be collected on the following Thursdays at 2:05 pm: Sep 2, 16, 30, Oct 14, 28, Nov 11, Dec 2. These "Homework Sessions" will be devoted to the discussion of the homework assignments.
Quizzes: There will be 7 short quizzes (around 15 minutes) on the following Tuesdays at 2:05 pm: Sep 7, 21, Oct 5, 19, Nov 2, 16, Dec 7. These quizzes concern the theoretical material covered in the previous lectures and hence are closed book.
Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and will be on Monday, Dec 13 in ROLLA-G4 from 8 to 10 in the morning. The final exam is open book.
Grading Policy: Each of the seven homework assignments is worth 90 points, each of the seven quizzes 20 points, and the final exam 230 points. Hence the emphasis on the final amount of points is weighted as follows:

Altogether 1000 points are available. A personal password may be used to obtain the personal scores from the web page. Note that these scores as well as the estimated final grades are updated weekly. The final grade will be determined according to the following table:
