Syllabus Mathematics 203, Spring Semester 2000

Lecture: Monday, Wednesday, Friday (excluding Jan 17, Mar 17, 27, 29, 31) in CSCI-204 from 8:30 to 9:20. Also, see the Calendar for a complete list of the happenings in this class.
Office Hours: On Monday and Wednesday after each lecture in ROLLA-115 from 9:25 to 10:25. Also Tuesdays, 2 pm - 3 pm. Also by appointment. Appointments may be scheduled in person or via e-mail (bohner@umr.edu), phone (341-6208), or fax (341-4741).
Text: "Linear Algebra and its Applications" by Gilbert Strang, Third Edition.
Contents: The first 6 chapters and some of the topics of Chapters 7 and 8 of the textbook, i.e., Gaussian elimination, vector spaces, linear equations, orthogonality, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and positive definite matrices.
Homework Assignments: There will be 12 weekly homework assignments. Usually, PDF Files of the assignments may be downloaded from my web page. Homeworks are due on Wednesdays and will be either collected or a quiz on one particular problem of the homework assignment will be written (closed book). Which one of the two possibilities occurs will be told only on Wednesday at the beginning of the class.
Exams: There will be 2 exams, announced at least one week in advance. The exams are open book.
Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and will be on Wednesday, May 10, in CSCI-204 from 10:30 to 12:30 in the morning.
Grading Policy: Each of the twelve homework assignments is worth 50 points, each of the two midterms 100 points, and the final exam 200 points. Hence the emphasis on the final amount of points is weighted as follows:
