Description Operator Lyapunov equations have many applications including feedback control design for partial differential equations. Algorithms based on time snapshots of solutions of infinite dimensional differential equations are considered to approximate the Lyapunov solution. These algorithms can be used when matrix approximations of the operators are unavailable or undesirable to use. Convergence theory for a low rank algorithm based on proper orthogonal decomposition is discussed, and a minimal storage algorithm for computing the product of the Lyapunov solution with a few vectors.
