Objectives
This week the material properties of a low-carbon steel are to be determined using tensile stress-strain data and then compared with standard values. The experiment will make use of the automated data collection systems and strain-gage extensometers on the Instron 4469 and 4485 universal testing machines.
The objectives for this portion of the experiment are:
- to show the student the procedures for automatic data acquisition for a uniaxial tensile test.
- to familiarize the student with the mechanical properties of low-carbon steel.
Each group will also be given the opportunity to choose a second sample from the following list.
The objectives for this portion of the experiment are:
- to demonstrate the stress-strain relationship for a material which may not exhibit a well-defined yield point.
- compare the mechanical properties of this material to those of low-carbon steel.
