How Long May I Borrow?

Please be aware of the following:

When an item which is checked out to you is requested by another patron, the library will issue a recall, often with a revised due date. Recalled items must be returned promptly. Fines for recalled items accrue at $.50 per day and will not be forgiven.You may not renew recalled items.

You may renew most items yourself using MERLIN's self-renewal feature. You may only self-renew an item 2 times. If you are not able to renew an item yourself via MERLIN, the Circulation staff can renew it if it has not been recalled for use by another patron.

If an item is overdue, you cannot use the self-renewal feature. Once you have been billed for an overdue item, it must be returned to the library.


The library has established the following loan terms for books and monographs:

Faculty, staff and graduate students:

  • Four months
Undergraduate and guest patrons:
  • One month

MOBIUS visiting patrons:

  • Twenty-one days


Some items have a shorter loan period as follows:

Videotapes: 3 days

Computing/Networking books: 3 days
(Located on 1st floor)

CD-ROMs and videos: 3 days

Audio materials: 2 weeks

Maps: 2 weeks

Periodicals: Overnight 
(Current and Bound issues)

Reference materials do not normally check out except under special circumstances.

Class Reserve: Most check out for 2 hours, for use in the library only. Some may be checked out longer, as directed by the course instructor. Fines for overdue reserve materials may be up to $3.20 per day.

RECALLS - LIBRARY MATERIALS MAY BE RECALLED WITH A SHORTENED DUE DATE AT ANY TIME. THERE IS A FINE OF $.50 PER DAY FOR OVERDUE RECALLED MATERIAL.
