Methods of Modeling the Oscillation Modes of Neutron Stars

Abstract
Neutron-degenerate matter is a state of matter found only inside neutron stars. Since the properties of this matter cannot be studied directly, they must be mathematically modeled. Using both analytical and numerical methods of integral calculus, a primitive mathematical model of an oscillating neutron star can be constructed and analyzed. The numerical data obtained in this way are of secondary importance to the mathematical relationships found between various factors such as mass, density, oscillation mode, and the equation of state.


Rob Crandall lives in Lake St. Louis, Missouri, and is a senior at Thomas Jefferson School. He plans to attend St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and major in mathematics or philosophy.
