The Consortium provides financial support for outstanding Missouri students to participate in mentored research activities in NASA Center Summer Internship Programs and Academies. Specifically, the Consortium has established funding for a statewide applicant pool for NASA Center Summer Program participants. The main goal of these collaborative partnerships with NASA is to engage, train, and prepare young researchers, engineers, and scientists for NASA's future missions. Undergraduate and graduate students at affiliate and non-affiliate universities throughout the state, including minority serving and rural schools, are eligible. Applicants are pre-screened based upon academic merit, letters of support, and potential for success. Final selections of NASA Center Summer Program students are made according to the criteria employed at the specific NASA Field Centers involved.

Summer Internship and Co-op Programs in the Aerospace Industry

The Missouri Space Grant Consortium has been very active in recruiting students and engaging them in internship and co-op programs in the aerospace industry. This effort has produced successful results in terms of engaging, training, and sustaining a viable STEM workforce. To carry on this activity, the Consortium provides financial support for high achieving Missouri students to participate in research programs at aerospace and space related corporate locations throughout the state and nation. Undergraduate and graduate students at affiliate and non-affiliate universities throughout the state, including minority serving and rural schools, are eligible. Applicants are pre-screened based upon academic merit, letters of support, and potential for success. Final selection of corporate program students are made according to the criteria developed by the specific industry partner involved. Moreover, the Consortium is aiming to establish corporate partnerships to collaborate on curricula development that meets aerospace industry needs, develop research and design projects for students, provide on-site reviews, contribute to lecture series, and make industry mentors available for students.

Each recipient of a Fellowship or Internship works during the academic year and/or summer on a specific research project, in a research laboratory or in the field, as provided and supervised by a faculty member or by research staff scientists. The Consortium maintains a focus on training graduates and undergraduates in research techniques, data analysis, publication and presentation of results, and outreach activities through K-12 school visits and public education events. At the beginning of the second semester each year all supported students are requested to prepare research reports describing their project and results. The students are then required to present results of their supported research at the Missouri Space Grant Consortium's Annual Spring Meeting, which is held in late April. The research papers are included in the proceedings of the annual meeting each program year. Graduate Fellowships: Fellowships are competitively awarded to doctoral or master's degree candidates in space sciences and aerospace engineering based on academic achievement and the merit of proposed research. Programs of study must be related to one or more of the NASA Mission Directorates. This program also benefits the Consortium's Research Infrastructure development, since these students actively participate in the actual conduct of research projects, as well as reinforce the aerospace career interests of other highly capable students, supporting the 'pipeline' recruitment and retention goals.

Undergraduate Research Internships: The MOSGC supports competitively awarded summer and academic year Undergraduate Research Internships. These awards are similar to the Graduate Fellowships in that they are distributed among Consortium Members with the intent to provide undergraduate training through independent student research and contribute to the national workforce in the aerospace industry and in space science related fields. Undergraduate students of demonstrated high academic achievement are selected to participate in the Space Grant internship programs.
