Abstract
Synthesis of a mixed cation alanate, NaCaAlH6, was attempted in an effort to identify a previously undiscovered compound. Low energy crystal structures were previously identified for NaCaAlH6 using a database search and a novel global optimization technique for ionic molecular crystals. Materials were prepared using high-energy mechanical milling and examined by x-ray diffraction. Hydrogen sorption studies of the prepared material indicated absorption and desorption of hydrogen at approximately 110°C.
Rachel Geoffroy lives in St. Louis, Missouri. She is presently a senior at St. Joseph's Academy and has been accepted at the University of Notre Dame and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Although she is undecided on the direction of her future, Rachel's plans will definitely include continuing research
