How to Put Together a Spacecraft: Lessons Learned from Component Integration

Shanna Montgomery
Missouri University of Science and Technology Satellite Team
Advisor: Dr. Hank Pernicka

Abstract
This report focuses on efforts as the lead student of the Integration subsystem of the Missouri University of Science and Technology Satellite Team (M-SAT). M-SAT is competing in the Nano-Sat 6 competition in which several universities build a nano-satellite to complete a unique mission. The winning school will have the honor to fly their satellite in space to perform their mission. On the satellite team, "integration" is activity responsible for the design and location of the component boxes, satellite assembly, writing assembly procedures, and coordinating general efforts with other subsystems. There are currently two members on the integration subsystem, Shanna Montgomery and Cecilia Nguyen. Integration has been active in satellite assembly, lubricant trade studies, maintaining clean room suits, satellite assembly, attending a satellite fabrication short course, and K-12 outreach. From taking on the position of Integration lead, the author learned both technical skills and life skills for working on a team design project.
Shanna Montgomery was raised and currently resides in St. Peters, Missouri. Since she was thirteen, she has been passionate about space exploration. This interest brought her to the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri where she is a third year student studying for her bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, and earning a minor in German. During her three years at the university, Shanna has been active in on-campus activities. Since freshman year, she has been a member of the school Yoga Fitness Club. She has also been a member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and in the fall semester of 2009, she was elected the intramurals officer for establishing a SWE intramurals team on campus for the first time. Shanna won the billiards doubles tournament for her section, and her intramurals team also won dodge ball and table tennis championships. Shanna joined the Missouri Satellite Team in 2008, and became the Integration subsystem lead in fall 2009. In spring semester 2010, she joined AIAA. Shanna dreams of working on spacecraft and aircraft for Boeing, Honeywell and NASA.
