Chapter 9 - Transverse Shear

Objectives

Course objective:  To learn to calculate the stresses for beams under various loading configurations.

Learning objectives:

  • Isolate the area to be included in the first-moment Q.
  • Calculate the centroid, area moment of inertia, and first-moment Q.
  • Draw the shear-force diagram for the beam.
  • Calculate the shear stress in rectangular (0.86), circular, pipe (0.82) and webbed (i-beam, channel, tee) (0.82) beams.
    • Draw shear-force diagram for simply-supported beam and calculate shear stress in rectangular beam (0.75).
    • Draw shear-force diagram for cantilever beam and calculate shear stress in rectangular beam (0.87).
    • Draw shear-force diagram for simply-supported beam and calculate shear stress in circular beam (0.85).
    • Draw shear-force diagram for cantilever beam and calculate shear stress in circular beam (0.75).
    • Calculate shear stress in webbed beams (1.01).
  • Isolate the area to be included in the first-moment Q for built-up members (1.00).
  • Calculate fastener spacing, fastener stress, or geometry of beam (1.00).

1. Chapter 8 has a LOT of concepts and different kinds of problems.  It takes a while to get through them all, but be sure to leave enough time for chapter 9.
2. Chapter 9 has essentially only one formula, but a lot of people struggle to correctly calculate Q.
