Pressure Vessels
This week we will test thin-wall steel and thick-wall aluminum cylindrical vessels. The thin-wall vessel has a 0-45-90 degree strain rosette attached at a random angle on the outer surface, and you will determine the principal stresses and directions, which will obviously line up with the hoop and axial directions. The thick-wall vessel has several uniaxial strain gages embedded in the cross-section, and these are already lined up with the principal directions. You will measure hoop and radial values. You will be given radii and moduli for both vessels. You will then compare the results from both vessels with the thick- and thin-wall pressure vessel theories. Which theory works best?
