Syllabus Mathematics 8, Fall Semester 2000

Lecture: Monday, Wednesday, Friday (excluding Sep 4, Oct 20, Nov 22, 24) in HSS-G5 from 8:30 to 9:20. Also, see the Calendar for a complete list of the happenings in this class.
Recitation Sessions are led by Mrs. Laura Pleimann, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Office Hours: On Monday and Wednesday after the lecture in ROLLA-115 from 9:30 to 10:45. Also by appointment. Appointments may be scheduled in person, by phone (341-6208), or via e-mail (bohner@umr.edu).
Text: "Calculus" (4rd Edition) by James Stewart.
Contents: The first 6 chapters of the textbook, i.e., functions, limits, derivatives, integrals, and applications.
Homework Assignments: Homework assignments will be given regularly and are collected in the recitation session. Not all homework will be graded but selected problems. In addition, there will be quizzes during the recitation sessions. Every Thursday (except Nov 23) there will be either a quiz or homework will be collected.
Hour Exams: There will be 4 hour exams on Sep 13, Oct 9, Nov 1, and Dec 6.
Basic Skills Exams: There will be 2 basic skills exams on Sep 29 and Nov 15.
Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and will be on Tuesday, Dec 12 from 8 to 10 in the morning.
Grading Policy: On each of the 15 Thursday sessions (either homework or quiz), it is possible to obtain 20 points. Each of the four hour exams is worth 100 points, each of the two basic skills exams 50 points, and the final exam 200 points. Hence the emphasis on the final amount of points is weighted as follows:

Altogether 1000 points are available. A personal password may be used to obtain the personal Scores from my web page. Note that these scores as well as the estimated final grades are updated weekly. The grade will be determined according to the following table:
