Objectives

Course objective:  To learn to calculate the displacements for beams under various loading configurations.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify boundary conditions for simply-supported (1.11) and cantilever (1.36) beams.
  • Identify the correct distributed-load (0.78), shear-force, bending-moment (0.91), slope (0.76), or elastic-curve (0.99) formulas based on the integration method.
  • Calculate the slope (1.41) and/or deflection (1.06) at a particular location in the beam based on the integration method.
  • Derive the elastic curve based on the integration method.
  • Recognize how to divide overhung and doubly-overhung beams into equivalent combination of simply-supported and cantilever beams.
  • Acquire relevant formulas from beam-deflection tables.
  • Calculate the slope and/or deflection at a particular location in the beam based on the superposition method.
