Course title Introduction to Architectural Design I
Course description Introduction to the interaction between architecture and the engineering disciplines. Theories of building and site design, technology as an integral component of design, plan and spatial organization, structural clarity, formal composition, and environmental context are considered as principle form determinants.

Course objectives

Learn theories with special emphasis on contemporary building design.

Understand fundamental concepts of architectural and building type analysis, and apply these concepts toward the successful solution of contemporary building design problems.

Course topics

Design Process: apply the identification of client needs, and the resulting influences upon architecture, to the design of contemporary buildings.

Design Theory: introduction to historical and contemporary analysis of (1) formal building types - central, linear, cluster, modular, etc. and (2) functional building types - residential, commercial, industrial, recreational, education, etc.

Skills and Techniques: introduction to developing and using architectural analysis and programming diagrams, matrices, and similar organizational devices.
