The Vermilion Cliffs, Echo Cliffs,
And Paria Canyon

This landslide complex along the Vermilion Cliffs near House Rock shows multiple slump-block, or Toreva-block style slides.  Notice the backrotated strata present in the landslide blocks.

The Vermilion Cliffs, Echo Cliffs, and Paria Canyon contain landslides failing mostly in the Petrified Forest Member of the Chinle Formation.  Major John Wesley Powell first noted the occurance of landslides in the region during his 1869 expedition to the canyons of the Green and Colorado Rivers.  Additional researchers have focused on the region and have published articles contributing to our knowledge of the area.  These three sections recount prior research and introduce our findings.
