Chapter 6 - Torsion
Objectives
Course objective: To learn to calculate the stresses, strains and angular displacements for torsion members (shafts), and to understand how power is transmitted through a gearbox.
Learning objectives:
- Draw (or recognize the correct) free-body diagrams of rotating machines (shafts).
- Apply Newton's Laws in two-dimensions.
- Sum moments/torques about one axis (1.25).
- Convert to consistent units of torque (in.-lb, ft-lb, Nm), stress (psi, ksi, Msi, Pa, kPa, MPa), angular displacement (deg., rad, rev), angular velocity (rpm, Hz, rad/s), and power (ft-lb/s, J/s, Watt, hp).
- Calculate torsional shear stresses (1.03).
- Calculate torsional deformations using torque-displacement relationship (1.01).
- Apply Newton's Laws and calculate torsional stresses and deformations.
- Sum moments/torques and calculate torsional shear stresses (1.06).
- Sum moments/torques and calculate torsional deformations (0.88).
- Compare shear stress and angle-of-twist limits for different loading scenarios and select the best/safest scenario (0.92).
- Calculate torque, speed (1.23), and angle (1.08) changes through a gear train.
- Consider power transmission through a gear train: torque/speed (1.19); angles (0.87); torque, speed and angles (0.70)
- Identify statically indeterminate shafts from statically determinate shafts.
- Derive the compatibility relationship for statically indeterminate concentric (0.80), end-to-end (0.72), and geared shafts.
