History of Rolla's Public Library

The Rolla Library building is located at 900. Pine Street Rolla, Mo.

The Library has moved to its present location in 1963. In this history outlook,

we will mention few facts regarding building improvements and its changes.


Building after completion in 1913

The building was completed in 1913. The original cost for the building was $ 45,000. The building's original purpose was to be a post office, which remained until 1963. In the fifty years of service as post office the building had few minor reparations, until 1955 when loading dock was added. The increase in population and increase in postal services, Rolla's post office was moved to new and bigger location. The existing Postal building was granted to Public library for $1.00. Even thou, Public Library existed before 1963, the new building gave it more formal look.


During 1981, Library building was badly damaged by fire. The building was renovated for next two years. During the time of renovation, the building was practically built for second time. Everything inside the building was renovated and replaced, as well as few new features were added.

Looking at the building from the street, one can say that the building looks the same as nearly 90, years after it was completed.

The last renovation of the building was in 1992, when the basement was remodeled in to meeting room. Renovation included remodeling restrooms, adding two small rooms for Central heating and airconditioning and ramp for handicap excess.
