Ordering Principles

To one degree or another, all things must have order, with out order there would be chaos, and chaos cannot survive on its own in our world.
The order of the Rolla Public Library is not easy to see at a first look. The floor plan gives a feeling of chaos in its present use with many unexpected placements. If one takes away the additions and renovations, more meaning develops in the building layout.
The easiest place to see the ordering principals is in the exterior of the building. By looking at any elevation you see a pattern of three. From every side of the building it appears to be split into three sections from both left to right and top to bottom. Looking from left to right there are three sections of windows all the way around. On the east and West sides there are simply three windows which split the building into nearly equal thirds.

To the North and South, the face is split by the placement of gutter detail. Smaller windows, as well as sections, flank either side of the large windows in the center. The center section is then split nearly equally into thirds by the three large, arched windows.

The same proportions are seen in the roof by the side view of the dormers on either side of the straight on view of the three dormers in the center, in line with the windows below.

On the inside the original layout has the same principal of three. Whether you look at it from North to South or East to West there are three distinct sections.

While there is not perfect symmetry in the floor plan, there is a distinct axis, which proves that you can have diversity with order.
